1:26 George Stephenson's 1829 Rocket was the first locomotive that was suitable, and practical, for hauling both freight and passengers. Without any doubt it was the Rocket that ushered in the Age of Steam and Rail transport. By reaching the unheard-of speed of 29.5 mph, it caused some critics to claim it would be safer to ride a military rocket than to ride on a train pulled by such a little locomotive.
